You need Git, the Node version in .node-version, the pnpm version in package.json, and a new, dedicated Supabase project under your own account. macOS also requires the Xcode command line tools. Use your own model credentials; official cloud hosting and official models are optional.
Clone this repository and the community backend into neighboring directories:
git clone --branch dev https://github.com/OpenDCAI/gugu.git
git clone --branch dev https://github.com/OpenDCAI/gugu-supabase.git
Follow the backend's self-hosting guide to prepare the project, configure SMTP for sign-in codes, and set SUPABASE_PROJECT_REF and SUPABASE_ACCESS_TOKEN locally.
Install and initialize the backend from its directory:
cd gugu-supabase
pnpm install --frozen-lockfile
pnpm run setup --client-dir ../gugu
Use pnpm run setup: plain pnpm setup is pnpm's built-in command. Setup writes the client's .envs/local.env, which contains only public connection settings; keep administration tokens out of the client and Git.
Return to the client directory and start an isolated development instance:
cd ../gugu
pnpm install --frozen-lockfile
pnpm rebuild:native
GUGU_DB_TARGET=local bash scripts/dev-app.sh
rebuild:native compiles native modules for Electron and is required after installing dependencies. The launch script selects .envs/local.env and prints the isolated data directories and log location. After signing in and completing onboarding, use your local CLI login or connect your credentials under Settings → Subscriptions, then create a local Agent.
Attachments use your own Supabase Storage. Collaborative file editing also requires the backend's services/files; see the file service guide. Optional hosting and model-provider switches are described in official service configuration.

After installing dependencies, you can run pnpm typecheck, pnpm lint, pnpm test:unit and pnpm build:renderer. Unit tests include browser projects, so run pnpm exec playwright install chromium first. Test projects and build instructions are in development tools. CI runs on GitHub-hosted runners with a disposable test database.
