open-scrantic is an open-source ai agents skill for AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Codex CLI, and ChatGPT, built by glauberlima. Reverse-engineered Rust reimplementation of the Johnny Castaway screensaver (Screen Antics, Sierra/Dynamix, 1992) for Windows, macOS and Linux. It has 50 GitHub stars.

Open Scrantic brings the original Screen Antics: Johnny Castaway screensaver (Sierra/Dynamix, 1992) back to modern computers: a free, open-source Rust reimplementation of the classic Windows 3.1 screensaver. Watch Johnny go about his days on his tiny island while a story unfolds from one day to the next, with the same behavior as the original.

[!IMPORTANT] You need your own copy of the original screensaver files. This project does not include them (see What you need).
Download the program for your system from the latest release:
| System | File |
|---|---|
| Windows | open-scrantic-windows-x64.exe |
| macOS | open-scrantic-macos |
| Linux | open-scrantic-linux-x64 |
Put it in the same folder as the three original screensaver files (SCRANTIC.SCR, RESOURCE.MAP
and RESOURCE.001).
Run it. It opens in a window; press Esc to exit. Start it with --fullscreen to fill the
screen. F12 saves a screenshot (-raw as drawn, -view as shown) next to the executable.
[!TIP] On Windows and want it as a real screensaver? Jump to Install as a Windows screensaver.
The program is not code-signed, so your system may warn about it.
chmod +x open-scrantic-macos && xattr -d com.apple.quarantine open-scrantic-macos, then
./open-scrantic-macos.chmod +x open-scrantic-linux-x64, then ./open-scrantic-linux-x64. If it complains
about a missing sound library, install ALSA (libasound2 on Debian and Ubuntu).Use the open-scrantic-windows-x64.scr file from the
latest release (not the .exe). You
also need the three original files.
Open PowerShell as administrator (Start menu, type PowerShell, right-click, Run as
administrator) and go to the folder that has the downloaded .scr and the three original files, for
example cd $env:USERPROFILE\Downloads.
Paste this:
New-Item -ItemType Directory -Force "$env:APPDATA\OpenScrantic" | Out-Null
Copy-Item SCRANTIC.SCR, RESOURCE.MAP, RESOURCE.001 "$env:APPDATA\OpenScrantic"
Copy-Item .\open-scrantic-windows-x64.scr "$env:SystemRoot\System32\OpenScrantic.scr"
Pick it: open Screen Saver Settings (Settings, Personalization, Lock screen, Screen saver
settings), choose OpenScrantic and set the wait time. Click Preview to check it. Shortcut: press
Win+R (or run in a terminal) control desk.cpl,,@screensaver to open that window directly.
That is all. To try it first without installing, right-click the .scr and choose Test.
%APPDATA%\OpenScrantic (usually C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\OpenScrantic),
because Windows only lists screensavers that are in System32. The .scr looks for them beside itself
first and then there; the first folder that has SCRANTIC.SCR is the install, and SCRANTIC.INI is
always read and written in that same folder (so nothing is ever written to System32). If the files are
missing, the screensaver says where to put them and creates that folder.%APPDATA% in step 2 points to the
administrator's profile; copy the three files to your own %APPDATA%\OpenScrantic instead./s) it runs fullscreen on the primary monitor (any other monitor goes black) and
exits on any key, click or mouse movement. Settings (/c) opens a small dialog with the Background,
Clouds, Waves, Sounds, Dedither and Soft audio checkboxes (the last two are off by default), saved to SCRANTIC.INI, and Preview (/p) draws the island,
silent, in the monitor picture of the Screen Saver Settings window./s, /c, /p, /a) and none of the options of the
regular program. On macOS and Linux there is no screensaver build.%SystemRoot%\System32\OpenScrantic.scr (as administrator) and the
%APPDATA%\OpenScrantic folder. The three files from the original Screen Antics: Johnny Castaway installation (Windows 3.1), all in one folder next to the program:

Run shasum -a 256 SCRANTIC.SCR RESOURCE.MAP RESOURCE.001 (macOS) or sha256sum (Linux) and compare.
On Windows, use certutil -hashfile <file> SHA256.
Options and story progress are stored in SCRANTIC.INI, in the folder of the original files (next to the program; for the Windows
screensaver, see its details). It is created on the
first run and rewritten when you exit normally, so edit it only while the program is closed. Keys are
case-insensitive.
Options (0 = off, 1 = on; default 1):
| Key | Effect when off |
|---|---|
Background |
no island or ocean background |
Clouds |
no clouds in the sky |
Waves |
no ocean whitecaps |
Sounds |
sound effects muted |
Two more keys are not in the original: Dedither and SoftAudio (off by default, 1 turns them on; the same as
--dedither and --soft-audio).
The original settings dialog offered only Load Background (Background), Sounds, a password and the start of
the day. Clouds and Waves were never in the dialog: they can only be changed in this file, or on the
command line.
Each option can also be set for one run with --background=N, --clouds=N, --waves=N or --sounds=N
(N is 0 or 1). The command line wins over the file, and such a run never writes the value back to it.
To start over, delete SCRANTIC.INI. If it contains an invalid value, it is replaced by the
defaults, story progress included.
Maintained by the program; edit only to force a chapter or time of day.
| Key | Default | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
NumDays |
0 |
story chapter of the day, 1–11; advances once per calendar day |
Introduction |
0 |
next chapter to show; the chapter plays when it is <= NumDays |
CurrentYear, CurrentMonth, CurrentDay |
0 |
date of the last run, used to detect a new day |
StartTime |
900 |
start of the 16-half-hour day/night cycle, as HHMM |
A NumDays of 0 or 1 restarts the story at chapter 1 on the next day change. A value above 11 is
invalid, so the whole file is replaced by the defaults.
Why do I need the original files? The art, animation scripts and sounds are copyrighted by their owners. This project reimplements only the engine and reads those assets when it runs.
Does it work with any build of the screensaver?
No. The loader checks known strings in SCRANTIC.SCR and rejects other builds of the executable.
Where is my progress saved?
In SCRANTIC.INI (see Settings).
Because it's cool, and because it'
